We catch up with Women's XV player Molly Wright...

When the Ladies XV won the Sarah Beaney Cup for the first time earlier this year it was a whole squad performance that got the team over the line.

However, front-rower Molly Wright did stand out at BT Murrayfield in the victory over Hillhead/Jordanhill with her work in the tight, carrying in attack and competence in defence.

She was named the player of the match for her work that day and, unsurprisingly, she was smiling after that one - just as she has been for most of her time in maroon and white since she joined the club in the summer of 2017.

Growing up in New Zealand, it is perhaps not a surprise that Wright, now 28, loved rugby growing up.

She progressed to play at provincial level for Otago and Christchurch before moving to the UK.

“I arrived in Scotland in January 2017 after a spell in London,” Wright explains.

“I spent a few months in Dumfries working and then moved to Edinburgh that August.

“When I got to Edinburgh I was keen to meet some new people and I thought that rugby was a good way to do that. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever get back into it, but I thought I’d give it a go.

“I am really glad I chose Watsonians because since day one the people here have been great with me and made me feel at home.

“In that first season we reached the Cup final and although we lost that one I knew that the team had been building for a few years before I’d arrived and felt that we could get even better.

“Winning the Cup last year was a great moment to share as a group and I think the great thing is that we are always pushing each other on to get better.

“There are some great new players in the squad now as well as some young players who are learning all of the time. For us it is not always just about the result, but putting into practice the things that we have been working on at training and progressing each week as a team.

“We have a big run of games coming up in the next few weeks an I just want to keep on playing my part and help keep the team on the up.”
