We catch up with Super6 player Lewis Berg…

Lewis Berg was the club’s sevens player of the year in 2018/19 - and he has taken that form into the XV-a-side game at centre during the first part of the FOSROC Super6 season.

During April and May he helped Watsonians lift the Kings of the Sevens title and was also part of the London Scottish squad that won the famous Melrose Sevens.

When Lewis returned to The Greenyards at the start of the Super6 campaign with Watsonians to take on the Southern Knight he created more good memories at the famous Borders ground by scoring the winning try.

Up until the festive break the squad had won five and lost one to top the table and now they are preparing to take on second placed Ayrshire Bulls who beat them in a hard fought affair on December 21.

Since school at George Watson’s College Lewis, 22 now, has turned out for Watsonians, Gala and Northumbria University and is loving being in maroon and white this term in the new-look competition.

“The Super6 has been a step up definitely, when you get on the ball you rally have to make it count and space can be harder to find, but as a player you want to challenge yourself and there are certainly no easy games in this competition which is good for keeping us focused,” Lewis, who is currently on a year long placement with club sponsor Graham and Sibbald, stated.

“I am enjoying the training as well while the extra analysis of the games has been good and helps you to work on your role in the team and the way the team are trying to work as a unit.

“The step-up in training sessions took a bit of time to get used to, but we showed in the first section of the season that we are a fit team and hopefully our hard work will continue to pay off in the next few months.”

Direct runner Berg has played a number of games with Joe Reynolds in the centre this term to date and he believes the latter’s experience has been helpful to him and the rest of the squad.

“Joey is quite experienced which is really handy. I am only 22 so it is good to have someone to learn from like that while stand-off [and captain] Lee Millar has also played a lot of rugby over the years and communicates well,” the former Scotland under-20 cap who previously had a stint in New Zealand said.

“The great thing is that we have other options in those positions to so we all push each other on in training to try and get the starting jerseys while our back three players are very dangerous if we can get them enough ball.”

Remember the Super6 squad play their next game on Saturday at home to Ayrshire Bulls at 3pm, get along and cheer them on
