We catch up with 2nd/3rd XV player Steven Findlay…

Steven Findlay had a productive season with WFC during 2019/20, playing eight games for the 2nd XV and one for the 3rd XV.

The second-row played as often as he could when his teaching commitments at Earlston High School allowed and in the games that he did play he made a big impact.

“I enjoyed the games that I was involved in for sure,” the 22-year-old said about 2019/20.

“It is a great bunch of boys down at the club, a number of us having been playing in the same teams over the last three years or so and have become good friends, so that is great and makes it fun to play on a Saturday.”

Steven, who grew up in Peebles and went to Peebles High School, started playing rugby when he was late primary school age and then heading into high school.

“I liked it at the time, but my friends were mainly playing other sports like football and golf so they took up a lot of my time so rugby took a back seat,” Steven recounts.

“When I was at uni [he studied PE teaching at Edinburgh University] I took rugby back up again, so that was about three years ago.

“I was doing a teaching placement at Biggar High School at the time and they were big on their rugby there and it really got me back into the sport.

“Some of my friends from uni were playing at Watsonians already so I joined the club and have loved it since.

“I played in the threes and fours for a couple of years and then played mainly in the twos in the season just gone.

“As well as playing rugby I now coach the under-14s at Earlston High School and I like doing that too, they are very enthusiastic about their rugby in the Borders as we all know!

“I have enjoyed my first year of teaching and although the last few weeks have been a bit different I am looking forward to teaching and continuing to play rugby when I can in 2020/21.”
