Watsonians Women beat rivals Hillhead Jordanhill 46-12 in the final of the Sarah Beaney Cup Final last Saturday at Murrayfield with Briar McNamara awarded player of the match. Watsonians have now won the competition 5 out of the last 6 times.
Heading into the final, the two sides had played each other twice this season and with just a point separating them, Watsonians knew that they had to be at their very best.... and they were!!
Hills took an early lead but in the 18th minute Freya Walker got the Watsonians first try with Nicole Marlow converting to level the score at 7-7. Three more tries were scored in the first half (Cieron Bell (2) and Briar McNamara) which saw Watsonians lead 24-7 after 40 minutes.
A quick start to the second half saw Sophie Anderson score with Hills adding a try just before the 50 minute mark taking the score to 29-12. Further tries then came from Julie Lyons (converted by Nicole), Mary Nelson and a second from Briar taking the Watsonians try tally to eight and a final winning score of 46-12.
This was a superb team performance with over 40 experienced players and emerging talent from the club take part in the Cup competition and which proved to be a great advert for Scottish Women's rugby.
Well done to everyone involved - players, coaches, team management, support team, player's families and sponsors and supporters. |
