With the 2019/20 season now just a few weeks away the WFC structure - for both on and off field matters - has been confirmed.
These are exciting times at Myreside for both our men’s and women’s players and Director of Rugby Chris Hunter continues in that role to oversee all on field matters.
The Super6 coaching set-up is headed up by Head Coach Fergus Pringle and he will be assisted by Nikki Walker.
The Super6 squad will also be working with Skills/Specialist Coach Richard Snedden - the former scrum-half who was part of the club’s coaching set-up last year - and Specialist Coach WP Nel.
Current Edinburgh Rugby and Scotland tighthead prop Nel needs little introduction, he is known as one of the best scrummagers in the world and the front-row players in the Super6 squad will benefit greatly from working with him.
The quartet will be given great help from a support team headed up by Team Manager Jono Willis.
In terms of the Super6 team name, ‘Watsonians Rugby’, the Super6 Board felt very strongly that it is important to maintain the traditional links the history of the club that has been on the go since 1875.
The strip design reflects this as we retain the traditional maroon and white hoops, with just a slight twist! We have used additional colours that appear in the WFC crest although the team will be adopting a slightly more modern badge to reflect the name change.
Those who played for the club in the 90’s will be familiar with our new away jersey.
The Club XV coaching team is led by Head Coach Bruce Ruthven and experienced rugby man Gordon Smith has returned from New Zealand and will be an Assistant Coach focusing on the forwards.
As the team builds up to playing in the new-look Tennent’s National League One Ruthven and Smith will be able to call on the knowledge of Skills/Specialist Coach Conan Sharman and Assistant Forwards Coach Ali Marsh.
The support team will be led by well-known club man Stan Buchan who is Team Manager.
The organisation of the second and third XVs will be ably led by Managers Ali Campbell and Fergus Henderson.
The Ladies XV are looking to build on last season’s second placed finish in the top flight and their Sarah Beaney Cup triumph.
They will be led by Head Coach Freddie Main who will be assisted by Scott Nightingale, Duncan Wilson and Lucy Brown.
Ex-player Amanda Byrne takes up the role of Team Manager.
Off the field, former Scotland centre Euan Kennedy has become president and heads up the committee for 2019/20.
He will be supported by three Vice-Presidents - Forbes Connor, John Kerr and Richard Kelly - with Iain Leslie an Mike Crerar continuing in their roles as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
There are 12 other members on the general committee from all sections of the club while there is also now a Super6 board as we enter an exciting new era.
It is headed up by Chairman John Reid and we are all looking forward to a great season at Myreside.
