The Watsonian Football Club (WFC) is thrilled to announce a year-long series of events to commemorate its 150th anniversary in 2025. This historic milestone marks a century and a half since the club’s inaugural match against St George on the 30th of January 1875, which ended in a memorable draw at Bainfield, now Yeaman Place.
The club has a celebrated history of playing successful rugby at Myreside, establishing itself as one of Scotland’s most successful clubs. The club has been pivotal in all three of Scotland’s Grand Slams, with legendary players such as AC Gillies in 1925, David Johnston and Euan Kennedy in 1984, and Gavin and Scott Hastings in 1990. More recent stars include Tom Smith, Duncan Hodge, and Adam Hastings, continuing the proud tradition of excellence. The Women’s team was formed in 1998, and numerous ‘Sonians have gained full international honours including Mary Pat McFarlane, Kerri Holdsworth, Jilly McCord, and Francesca McGhie. In their own 26 year history, they have been perennial silverware contenders and in recent years have notably claimed the Sarah Beany Cup in 2019, 2023, and 2024 and the Women’s Premiership trophy in 2019 and 2021.
Throughout 2025, WFC will honour its rich heritage and the contributions of players, supporters, and the entire Watsonian community with a host of celebratory events, culminating in a spectacular Gala Dinner at the O2 Corn Exchange in Chesser, Edinburgh, on Friday the 21st of November 2025 with guest speakers Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Ian McGeechan.
