Rachel Bragg is enjoying being captain of the Ladies XV - and has urged her team to keep up the standards they have set themselves this weekend when Ayr visit Myreside.

Last Sunday’s 52-24 triumph at Bridgehaugh against Stirling County made it three wins from three for Freddie Main’s charges in the Tennent’s Premiership to date.

This coming Sunday Ayr are the visitors to Edinburgh before a home meeting with Hillhead/Jordanhill on September 22 and then a break from action.

The meeting with league leaders Hills is much anticipated, but no one is looking further than the Ayr match, with all opponents in the top flight dangerous on their day.

“We have played some good rugby in the first three games and we are enjoying it, but we know that there are certain areas of the game that we can still improve on and we are working hard in training to get better as a group,” Bragg, who was appointed captain in the summer, said.

“I am honoured to be captain of this squad and after the Sarah Beaney Cup win last season we are really keen to build on that and continue to set ourselves high standards.

“The great thing is that a lot of young players and new players have joined the group and the competition for places continues to get tougher so it keeps everyone on their toes which is what you want.”

Bragg, 28, is originally from Shropshire and has previously played for Stewartry and Dick Vet.

The second-row - who is a vet in her day job - is in her third season at WFC and is being supported this term by new vice-captain Isla Craigie.

“I think it is working well between myself and Isla and it is good to have a forward and a back working together because we can see different parts of the game and make sure everyone in the squad is happy,” she explained.

“There is a great buzz about training at the minute and everyone is pushing hard to get spots in the starting XV so long may that continue.”

The scorers in last week’s win over County were Megan Gaffney with three tries, Bryony Nelson with two and Hannah Smith, Craigie and Alice King with one apiece. Nicola Nightingale kicked six conversions.
